ProLiteracy is a national organization for adult education providers, especially nonprofit organizations like Aspire. Each year they release national statistics gathered from their members.
Nationally, in calendar year 2021, nearly 150,000 adult students were taught by more than 80,000 instructors and volunteers. While that number sounds impressive, it’s sobering to remember that there are 350,000 adults in Dallas County who don’t have a high school diploma. Neither national nor local needs are being met currently. This is why Aspire completed a merger in 2020: to grow the number of adults and families served in north Texas.
Of note in the national ProLiteracy report are the following:
Student Demographics 67% Female 31% Male 2% Nonbinary Majority of students are Latinx (42%) and Black (19%)
31% Unemployed (up 6% since last year)
Online programs grew from 42% in 2020 to 69% in 2021
